God, I Love Blackjack
.................................
It's best to wait it out
Relaxed and expectant
Playing the percentages
Small losses, smaller wins
Until that moment of certainty
Arrives, phosphorescent
Alive as plankton surfing the crest
Of a giddy whiskey wave
The shock of second sight
Singed and singing
Reeking of cordite and bliss
Stealing the dealer's hole-card
Right from under her fingers
Right from under her nose
As if the cards were backed in glass
They'd brand us if they knew the truth
But instead keep taking
Impossible side-bets
And we all laugh
Until the wave breaks
And takes it all
Back to sea
