Alan DeNiro was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, a city firmly embedded in the snow belt. After growing up there, he attended the College of Wooster (Ohio), a college surrounded by corn, Amish, and Rubbermaid factories. After earning a BA in English in 1995, he then attended the University of Virginia, where he received his MFA in Poetry Writing in 1997. Imme- diately after graduation he founded Taverner's Koans, an online hybrid poetry journal and poet's resource. His poems have appeared in Willow Springs, Cimarron Review, Graham House Review, Artful Dodge, Blue Moon Review, and elsewhere. The Black Hare is the first poem of a book length trilogy entitled Hinterlands , which is currently seeking a publisher. Alan teaches Expository Writing at the University of Richmond, and lives in Charlottesville.
