My Daughter Drives a Pickup Truck
.................................

my daughter drives a pickup truck
big half ton Chevy stick shift long bed
her grandfather
     son of a pioneer mom
     who travelled by covered wagon
     from Ontario to Saskatchewan
lived in a soddy for years
     sweeping dirt floors
     cooked over a wood stove
     for thirteen farm hands
     when harvest time arrived
prepared all of Sunday's food on Saturday
     to preserve the Lord's Day
     watered and fed farm animals
gave birth to her two children
     on the kitchen table
doesn't understand
thinks that his grandaughter's behavior
is unfeminine
the irony escapes him completely
