nosy neighbor

Your eyes are undrained pools
covered in pale bruised magnolia leaves
hiding depths beneath
your stretched vowel southern charm.
The white cloud from your cigarette
hanging between us like ink
from an escaping octopus.

I searched your living room
while you went to fetch the drinks,
but the photographs and furniture,
like faithful servants,
just aren't talking.
